The best team in the league can still be one of the worst teams to bet on.

Against the spread is not asking which team is better.

It is asking whether that team can outperform the expectation already placed on it.

A dominant team can keep winning games while repeatedly failing to cover because the market keeps giving it larger numbers.

The final score tells you who won.

The ATS record tells you whether the team performed better or worse than expected.

A great team can be awful against the spread and a losing team can quietly be one of the best teams in the league against the spread. This is because the spread is not asking who will win. It's asking whether a team can perform better or worse versus Vegas' expectation. A dominant team might keep winning games but repeatedly fail to cover larger numbers. A weaker team might lose games but keep them much closer than expected. So if you only look at wins and losses, you are missing half the story. You need to compare a team's actual results versus the expectations that were put on them because the best team is not always the best team to back.
