But this market's inequality matters more than its average: top scorers find the net in a quarter to a third of their games, which prices honestly near +200 to +300, while bottom-six forwards score in well under a tenth, making their +450 a donation dressed as a sleeper. What actually predicts goals
Shot volume first, the most honest precursor: goals follow shots more reliably than they follow skill narratives, and a slumping shooter still generating five attempts is closer to scoring than the price implies. Power play role second: a heavy share of NHL goals arrive on the man advantage, making first-unit deployment the most direct boost on the board. Matchup third: weak goaltending and permissive defensive structures lift every scorer's chances, and team-level goals-against patterns persist enough to measure.
How to bet it without donating
Convert the price, compare to the player's documented scoring rate in current deployment, and respect the variance: even perfect process loses most of these tickets. Size them as the long shots they are, prefer volume shooters with power play time in soft matchups, and skip the famous-name tax: the market charges for last season's highlight reel long after the deployment changed.
