The NHL points prop counts goals and assists together: two routes to the same ticket. That breadth makes it the most forgiving scoring bet in hockey, and our grading sample shows exactly how forgiving: more than goals alone, less than the optimism it attracts.
How NHL points props work
The standard line is 0.5, one point of any kind to cash, with elite producers pushed to 1.5. Across 1,587 graded points props at main lines in our sample, the over hit 30.9 percent: nearly three times the goal-only rate of 11.2, but still a minority outcome, priced accordingly at plus money for most skaters.
Why two routes still is not half
Because both routes run through scoring plays, and scoring plays are scarce. An average NHL team scores about three goals a night, each crediting at most three players, which caps the points distributed per game around eighteen across both rosters. Two dozen skaters dress; most nights, most of them touch none of it. The points prop is a bet on being inside the small circle of players the night's goals happen to pass through.
What concentrates the circle
Line and power play deployment first, overwhelmingly: top-six forwards on first-unit power plays absorb a wildly disproportionate share of available points, and deployment is public, stable, and checkable. Linemate quality second: points are social stats, and skating next to a finisher converts your passes into assists at measurably better rates. Game environment third: projected high-total games distribute more points, making team totals a quiet input, while facing elite goaltending starves everyone.
How to evaluate a points line
Documented rate at 0.5 in current deployment against the offered price. At +130 the bar is 43.5 percent, comfortably above the pool's 30.9, so the bet needs a player whose role genuinely concentrates the night's scoring: top line, first power play, live linemates. The trap is deployment lag: the market prices last month's line combinations, and a demotion to the third line guts this prop before the price notices.
