Shots on goal is hockey's volume prop, the closest the sport gets to a basketball-style counting stat, and the market where role data beats highlight reels most reliably. Our graded sample shows the standard line leaning under, and the reasons are structural, not cyclical.
How NHL shots on goal props work
Books post SOG lines for forwards and shooting defensemen, commonly 1.5 to 3.5, at standard juice. Across 1,352 graded SOG props at main lines in our sample, the over hit 45.9 percent. The bet counts only shots that reach the net: misses and blocks die uncounted, which is half the story of why overs leak.
The attempt-to-shot funnel
A shot on goal survives a funnel: the attempt has to avoid a shin pad, miss the glass, and force a save or score. Roughly half of all attempts never make it through, so a shooter's raw attempt volume gets taxed before it touches your ticket, and the tax rate swings with opponent shot-blocking commitment and game state. Players who generate attempts from the slot lose less to the funnel than point shooters whose drives navigate four bodies.
What drives the count
Ice time and power play deployment first: SOG accumulates with shifts, and a first-unit power play role is worth a shot per night by itself. Shooting identity second: pass-first wingers and shoot-everything snipers can share a line on the depth chart and live in different prop universes; individual attempt rates are stable and public. Opponent style third: heavy shot-blocking teams and low-event defensive systems suppress everyone's counts, while run-and-gun opponents inflate them, and the team-level patterns persist.
How to evaluate a SOG line
Documented rate at the exact number in recent relevant games, with deployment as the sanity check: is the power play role intact, are the minutes stable, is the line intact? Then the price at the standard bar. The strongest spots are high-attempt shooters with secure special-teams roles against permissive defensive structures; the weakest are name-brand scorers whose goals come on rare-but-clean looks, priced as if scoring talent were shooting volume.
Here's the bottom line
SOG overs hit 45.9 percent at main lines in our graded sample because the funnel taxes every attempt before it counts. Bet volume identities with secure deployment against the right styles, at numbers their documented rates actually clear. DataStreak tracks every skater's real SOG hit rate at the exact line, nightly, with the matchup context attached.
